ARE YOU READY FOR THE 24th EDITION OF THE MAGALIES MONSTER MTB CHALLENGE?
IT’S A RACE WITH REAL HISTORY
This will be the 24th edition of the Magalies Monster. It’s one of the country’s oldest and most respected mountain bike marathons. It has been contested by most of the biggest names in the sport over the past two decades, and various generations of mountain bikers who have answered to the call ‘Beat the Monster’! The medals are not another race medal, it’s an actual badge of honour!!
Magalies Monster MTB Classic is one of South Africa’s favourite mountain bike marathons and the 2025 edition on Saturday 31 May, promises to deliver another generous dose of challenges, rewards and memorable experiences. It will treat mountain biking enthusiast to a ”real” MTB experience that is challenging yet rewarding. Featuring a good mixture of terrain, this is one of the most beautiful MTB routes in and around Gauteng and the North West Province.
THERE ARE MULTIPLE DISTANCES
The Full Marathon 62 km
Implies that this is not the easiest of marathons. The marathon distance race over +/-62km has a total of 1040m of climbing. The marathon distance race includes the formidable ascent – and subsequent descent of the Buffelspoort valley. The route was adapted due to the condition of the road at Breedtsnek. The new route has a beautiful scenery with natural fountains, a game farm, berry farm as well as citrus farms.
The Half Marathon 33 km
With 473 metres of ascent. It might not be the big Monster Route, but still tough and fun to do. This distance is unique, as it is perfect for younger athletes who want to race each other in a highly competitive environment and 70 % of the route is very ridable and non-technical. The half-marathon has its own Mini Monster climb, which is shorter, but steeper than the monster climb in marathon. Only the fit, strong riders will be able to ride the whole climb, but it’s sure to offer a good challenge
The Fun Ride 15 km
With 217 meters of ascent. It is a pure mountain biking bliss in the Buffelspoort Valley and the route offers an exciting variety of terrain farming jeep tracks, untouched Magaliesberg Mountain trails and indigenous bushveld
IT’S CLOSE ENOUGH FOR A DAY/ WEEKEND OUT
Based at the ATKV Buffelspoort resort, (which is located in the magnificent Buffelspoort Valley in the North West Province,) the Magalies Monster is accessible to many.
